Celebrate Dias de Los Muertos and Halloween with Xinar’s sugar skull charm! This is a flat-back silver charm with exquisite detailing, featuring the swirls and lines commonly associated with Latin American sugar skulls, as seen in movies like Disney’s Coco.

Dias de Los Muertos is celebrated in Latin American countries on November 1 & 2. The Days of the Dead celebration combines Roman Catholicism with pre-Hispanic traditions, primarily particular customs taken from the Aztec. Days of the Dead events were initially held during July and August in pre-conquest Mexico. They were Aztec feasts of the dead (Miccailhuitl and Miccailhuitontli).

There are existing accounts of the Mayan village festivity of Hanal Pixan. This feast is still recognized in Quintana Roo and the Yucatan regions of southeast Mexico.  In the 19th century, Fanny Calderón de la Barca mentioned several customs, including draping Catholic churches in black for the Days of the Dead. Fanny also describes old women manning stalls crying out, “Skulls, niñas, skulls!” This is the first official record of sugar skulls.
