Why Does Santa Claus Go Down Chimneys?

The image of Santa Claus coming down the chimney was popularized by the renowned poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (also known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”). The poem was anonymously published in 1823 until it was claimed by a teacher of Oriental Languages and Hebrew, Clement Clark Moore, though some doubt his authorship to this day.

According to the rhyme, Santa Claus descends the chimney “with a bound,” then rises up the chimney after distributing his gifts. With his paintings of a fat, joyful, bearded guy carrying gifts in a sleigh, illustrator Thomas Nast reinforced the poem’s idea of Santa Claus.

The hearth and chimney serve as a transitional area bridging the natural and supernatural realms in European mythology. Many otherworldly beings, according to folklore, use this specific transitional area to enter homes—for good or for harm. According to Scottish and English tradition, the brownie is a household spirit who helps with domestic work only at night and enters and exits by the chimney.

In Slovenia, a shape-shifting fairy known as the Skrat bestows wealth on human families who cultivate his favor, bringing money down the chimney in a fiery form. According to Celtic legend, a nursery bogie known as the bodach is said to slip down chimneys and take children.

During the winter holidays, several chimney-traveling spirits appear in particular. During the Twelve Days of Christmas in Greece, goblins knew as Kallikantzaroi slip down the chimney to cause havoc. La Befana, often known as the Christmas witch, is a character in Italian folklore that brings gifts the night before Epiphany, laying them in shoes beside the hearth.
