Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas or Kris Kringle, has a long and illustrious history rooted in Christmas customs. Although known today as the cheerful man in red who distributes toys to good girls and boys on Christmas Eve, Saint Nicholas’ narrative dates back to the third century.
His mythology can be traced back to a monk named St. Nicholas, who lived hundreds of years ago. Nicholas was thought to have been born in 280 A.D. at Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey.
St. Nicholas was the center of many narratives because of his righteousness and charity. He is supposed to have given away all of his inherited money and spent his time traveling the country assisting the needy and sick. In addition, St. Nicholas spared three poor girls from being sold into slavery by their families by supplying them with a dowry. This dowry saves the girls from a life of slavery.
Nicholas’ fame grew throughout time, and he became recognized as the guardian of children and mariners. On December 6th, people observed his feast day. This was once thought to be an excellent day for making significant purchases or getting married. By the period of the Renaissance, St. Nicholas had become Europe’s most famous saint. St. Nicholas retained a high reputation, notably in Holland, even after the Protestant Reformation banned saint veneration.
