What is the History of Mardi Gras?
Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), which marks the end of the pre-Lenten season, is known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday in France. Mardi Gras derives its name from using up all the fats in the house before Lent to prepare for fasting and abstinence. The main Carnival festival in the United States is held in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Carnival season begins on Twelfth Night (Epiphany, January 6) and ends ten days before Shrove Tuesday with the Mardi Gras celebrations. The period leading up to Mardi Gras and the Rex procession is full of great revelry parades, both day and night. Yellow, gold, green, and purple beads are usually distributed, and king cake consumption is a standard celebration component.
