What is a Leprechaun?

In Irish tradition, a leprechaun is a fairy who takes the form of a small older man with a leather apron and a wonky hat. He is a solitary man who lives in distant locations and makes footwear and leather boots. The noise of his pounding reveals his presence. He has a hidden pot of gold; if apprehended and threatened with bodily harm, he may betray its location if his captor maintains his eyes on him. Unfortunately, the captor is frequently duped into looking away, and the fairy vanishes.

The name comes from the Old Irish word luchorpan, which translates to “small body.”
