What’s the History of Birthday Cakes?

For thousands of years, cultures have made celebration ‘cakes’ (the terms cake and bread were frequently interchanged). Cakes, specifically for birthdays, are thought to have originated in Germany in the 1400s and are comparable to what we enjoy today. Cakes were virtually exclusively used to celebrate weddings before that time, but bakers also began to sell them for birthdays.

Birthday cakes were nearly entirely for the wealthy before the industrial revolution, as they could afford such luxury. However, the Industrial Revolution aided the expansion of birthday cakes, which saw the progress and multiplication of technology and resources, making them cheaper and easier to create.

The tradition of lighting candles adorning a cake, like cakes themselves, dates back thousands of years, but it was not connected with birthdays until much later.

Artemis was the goddess of the hunt and the moon in Ancient Greece (Her twin brother, Apollo, was the god of the sun). Cakes delivered to Artemis’ temple were supposed to be garnished with candles to make them gleam like the moon. Smoke was also thought to be a means of transporting petitions to the gods by many ancient tribes and religions, and this belief is probably the origin of our current “make a wish” practice.

The inclusion of candles, like the marketing of birthday cakes, is credited to the Germans around the 1700s, when Kinderfesten, or children’s birthday parties, became more popular. Then, it was customary to light a candle for each year of their lives and more candles to represent future years.

While birthday festivities differ from culture to culture, most cultures commemorate the birth anniversary in some fashion, and baked sweets such as birthday cakes appear to be a popular way!
