What Do Elves Symbolize in Christmas?
The elf’s origins are claimed to have come from Norse mythology, where the álfar, also known as huldufólk, or “hidden folk,” are mentioned. This Norse narrative was most likely mixed with other Celtic and Scandinavian cultures and beliefs about nature spirits, fairies, and elves, creating the Christmas elf character as we know it. Similar fantastical beings also exist in other parts of the globe and can be connected to this narrative. Some examples are the kobolds from Germany and some house spirits known as brownies in Scotland. In addition, elves were viewed as evil in Medieval Europe and were frequently associated with demons.
The Christmas elf first appeared in literature in 1850, thanks to author Louisa May Alcott’s finished but never published work called Christmas Elves. Godey’s Lady’s Book popularized the concept of the elves in the workshop.
