How Did Reindeers Become Associated with Christmas?

After being created in 1939 by Robert L. May, ‘Rudolph’ has come to symbolize the joyous magic of Christmas not just in Northern America but around the world. Robert L. May and his publisher Montgomery Ward received worldwide acclaim for their spontaneous creation of a discouraged reindeer who his peers mocked for having a highly sparkly nose.

Apart from the most adorned fictitious reindeer of all time (originally named Rollo, before Reginald, before Rudolph), the reindeer, or Rangifer tarandus, has a 2,000-year history. The reindeer, often known as the ‘caribou,’ is a species of reindeer native to the world’s arctic and subarctic regions.

Throughout history, the Saami, Evenks, Chukchi, Nerets, and Khants populations used the reindeer for economic purposes. The reindeer was praised for its husbandry abilities and ability to support the people’s needs livelihoods. During World War II, the Soviet troops used the contemporary reindeer as a draught animal to convey sick men.

Santa’s renowned eight magical Christmas reindeers, are well-known, despite the fact that they are a relatively new group, having first featured in literature in 1823. Of course, Christmas is much, much older than these magical reindeer. On the other hand, reindeer have long been connected with Christmas and winter celebrations, especially in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Reindeer are revered in Pagan mythology, and their old practices became part of Christmas celebrations throughout the Middle Ages (when Pagans converted to Christianity).
