The cornucopia or “horn of plenty” in classical antiquity, was a big horn-shaped vessel that was constantly overflowing with produce, flowers, or nuts symbolized abundance and sustenance. Mythology offers numerous reasons for cornucopia’s genesis. One of the most well-known surrounds the birth and care of Zeus, who had to be concealed from Cronus, his consuming father.
Baby Zeus was tended to and guarded by a multitude of celestial guardians, including the goat Amaltheia, in a cave on Mount Ida on the island of Crete. Amaltheia provided him with milk. The future nursing king of the deities has remarkable strength and talents. While playing with his nursemaid, he accidentally broke one of her horns, which suddenly had the divine capacity to offer continuous food, as much as the god’s foster mother had. Another narrative states that the cornucopia came about when when Heracles (Roman Hercules) struggled with the river god Achelous and cut off one of his horns; river deities were frequently represented as horned.
