The Christmas ornament is a simple symbol of holiday cheer, but it has a mysterious past. The first ornaments, which are thought to have originated in 16th century Germany, were nothing like what we know today. Although we refer to them as “Christmas” trees, the beautiful evergreen predates the Christmas season. The habit of bringing in evergreen boughs during the winter solstice is thought to have originated with the ancient Egyptians. The reassuring sight of evergreen life provided hope throughout the chilly days and long winter nights, serving a similar purpose in the Druids’, Romans’, and Vikings’ varied ancient winter solstice celebrations.

The modern Christmas tree custom is considered to have started in 16th century Germany when miniature evergreen trees were used as “Paradise trees” in church plays, decorated with candles, apples, nuts, and berries. Devout Christians gradually began to incorporate these decked trees into their homes during the festive season. Thus, the custom, which evolved into a Christian ceremony, began to spread throughout Europe.

German immigrants carried this ritual to America, quickly rejected by Puritanical Christian groups because of its historically pagan implications. Although it took a while for the practice to catch on, small communities of German-born immigrants noted it as early as the mid-1700s.
