Humpty Dumpty has appeared in English nursery lore since 1797, and some historians connect the rhyme to a large cannon used at the Siege of Colchester during the English Civil War — though the egg interpretation has long since taken over. Whatever its origins, the image of that precarious figure atop a wall is one of the most recognizable in children's literature.
