Centrifugal casting at roughly 50 G's of force drives molten silver through the mold, faithfully reproducing the Arch's smooth tapering legs and the way they converge at the apex. Individual hand-finishing afterward means each piece has its own character — no two are exactly alike from the bench.
Completed in 1965 as a monument to American westward expansion, the Arch frames the St. Louis skyline and stands at the edge of the park where Lewis and Clark departed for the uncharted West in 1804.
