The history of coffins is quite fascinating.

Some aboriginal peoples still employ crude wooden coffins made from a tree trunk split along the middle and emptied. In medieval Europe, those who could not purchase stone used this form of coffin, which was changed by sawing, while the poor were interred without coffins, wrapped merely in linen or topped with hay and blossoms. During the Middle Ages, lead coffins were also utilized in Europe, and they were designed like Egyptian mummy tombs. Iron coffins were used as late as the 17th century in Scotland and England, when coffins were commonplace for all strata, including the impoverished.

Chaldean coffins were typically clay jars with the top left wide open; judging by the size of the opening, these coffins were shaped and heated around the body. Egyptian coffins, also known as sarcophagi, were the biggest stone coffins known, and they were usually highly cleaned and decorated with hieroglyphics that narrated the deceased’s history or narrative.
