Special Feature: Symbolism in Jewelry

There were symbols for as long as people have learned how to convey emotions, ideas, and other things in their minds.

In the rituals of affirmation, symbols play an essential role, and we use thousands of these symbolic items daily. Objects are given new meanings to be used to convey information and ideas instantly. The goal of symbolism is to imbue objects with hidden or layered meanings that are only known to a select group of people.

Our common language is bolstered by more overt symbols of power (such as love), strength, spirituality, and belief. In addition, there are a wide variety of symbols used by rituals, clubs, religions, countries, and cultures to unify, protect, and connect those who believe.

Since the first caveman or woman wore a shaped rock around their neck for the sake of beauty, symbolism has been a crucial component of adornment. What better way to show one’s beliefs, affiliations, or strength and power than to wear a piece of jewelry with its symbol on it? If you’re trying to communicate something explicitly or subliminally, characters always get your point across better.

During the Victorian era, it was common practice to give a piece of jewelry as a token of congratulations to mark a significant occasion in a person’s life. Secret codes of love tokens, gifts, and mementos from loved ones became an obsession for the Victorian generation. Elaborate messages were exchanged by sending and receiving flowers, gems, and jewelry. When the first letters of the gems’ names are mixed, statements like “Je t’adore” appear in patterns. Dogs were used to represent “faithful service,” while butterflies and flowers meant “I’m settled,” among other things.

The Victorians were obsessed with horticulture, and they traveled the world in search of plants to bring back to England. Floral and botanical designs were rendered in fine detail, and manuals were produced to explain the significance of a particular method. As a result, every type of flower, fruit, plant, leaf, and bug can now be depicted in jewelry using various new and improved techniques.

When a loved one’s hair was used as a memento, it had evolved into intricate designs and “painted” techniques that allowed for elaborate messages to be added to the intrinsic sentiment. Weaved hair jewelry made from 3D woven-hair charms held together with metal clasps. This allowed for more significant and more elaborate expressions of love, such as creating entire hairstyles.

While death-related imagery has long been a part of human culture, the 17th and 18th centuries saw a spike in the use of these images. Everyone will eventually die, and the wearer of this symbology was meant to be reminded of this. This certainty was reinforced by adorning the clothing with skulls and other skeletal images, as well as mottos.

To express grief in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, customs included prescribed periods of pullout from society, having to wear specific clothing and jewelry to symbolize mourning, as well as memorial jewels.

Crosses, beads, and other symbols were sculpted from jet or bog oak or made from black glass and black onyx during this period. Hair-filled bracelets, rings, watch fobs, and blockets also served as constant reminders of those who had passed. When a loved one passed away, hair was used as a way of remembering them and keeping them close to their heart.
