The History of Camping

Camping is a form of recreation that involves setting up a temporary home in the great outdoors, usually in the form of a tent or a vehicle that has been specially designed or modified for the purpose. For a time, camping was a rough, primitive, back-to-nature pastime only enjoyed by hardy outdoor enthusiasts, but it has since become the norm for many families.

Thomas Hiram Holding, the author of the first edition of The Camper’s Handbook in 1908, is considered the father of modern recreational camping. From his childhood experiences on the prairies of the United States in 1853, he developed an insatiable desire to spend time in the wilderness camping with a group of 300 people. In 1877, he took a canoe trip through the Scottish Highlands, and the following year, he returned to do the same thing.

In 1901, Holding founded the Association of Cycle Campers, the first camping club globally. By 1907, the Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland had merged with several other clubs to form the Camping Club of Great Britain. It was in 1909 that Robert Falcon Scott was elected president.

Robert Baden-Powell served as the president of the Camping Club after World War I, helping to foster the growth of organizations throughout Western Europe.

Until the early 1870s, people in North America traveled by foot, horseback, or canoe into the wilderness for recreation, but there was no organized camping movement. The Adirondack Mountain Club and other organizations are just a few organizations that have long catered to campers.

After World War II, increased leisure time and the availability of motorized camping vehicles sparked a boom in camper associations on a large scale. This ushered in an explosion in the popularity of camping.

In 1861, a boys’ camp for students of the Gunnery School for Boys in Washington, Conn., was established by Frederick William Gunn.

Its success was immediate, and it was repeated for the next 18 years in a row. Similar camps began to spring up around the world. Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife established the first girls’ camp on the Thames River in Connecticut in 1888.

In 1861, the Gunnery School for Boys in Washington, Conn., opened a camp for its students at Milford-on-the-Sound, run by Frederick William Gunn and his wife. Its success was immediate and repeated for the next 18 years. After that, similar camps began to spring up. Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife established the first girls’ camp on the Thames River in Connecticut in 1888.

Whether primitive or motorized, camping is becoming more and more popular in the US, Canada, and Western Europe. The proliferation of RV campsites is primarily to blame for much of this expansion (RVs). Paved parking areas in scenic locations are provided at many public and commercial campsites specifically for RVs. In addition, government agencies in the United States and Canada are working hard to accommodate the growing popularity of free camping in their respective countries. Water and electrical hookups are standard in RV campgrounds, so guests can enjoy many of the comforts of home while camping.
