Unique Feature: What Did Learning Look Like in Prehistory?

When we see how much effort and money our society puts into providing high-quality public schools for our nation’s children, we can’t help but assume that there must be some logical explanation for all of this. It’s possible that children wouldn’t become capable adults if we didn’t make them go to school or if schools were run differently.

Alternatively, it’s possible that other approaches to child development and education were put to the test and were found to be ineffective by some exceptionally bright individuals.

Self-directed play and exploration were the primary means children learned in the beginning, going back hundreds of thousands of years.

Schools are relatively new developments in human society as a whole. We hunted and gathered for hundreds of thousands of years before agriculture was developed. According to anthropological research, children in hunter-gatherer cultures learned everything they needed to know to be successful adults through their play and exploration.

Children’s strong urges to play and explore are most likely a result of our ancestors’ evolution as hunter-gatherers. Hunter-gatherers allowed their children almost unlimited freedom to play and explore independently because they recognized that these activities are a child’s natural means of learning.

Children were compelled to work in agriculture and industry due to these developments. However, there were no opportunities for fun or exploration.

Agriculture, which began 10,000 years ago in some regions and later spread to others, triggered a massive shift in people’s way of life. The way of life of the hunter-gatherer was labor-intensive, but it required a lot of skill and knowledge. People who hunted and gathered had to learn a lot about the plants and animals they relied on, as well as the landscapes they foraged in. They also had to learn how to make and use hunting and gathering implements. In addition, they needed to be self-sufficient and resourceful when gathering food and tracking wildlife. That being said, they did not have to put in a lot of time or put in a lot of effort.

Researchers have found that hunter-gatherer groups didn’t differentiate between work and play. Instead, all of life was considered to play.

All of that changed over time as a result of farming. People could have more children because agriculture allowed them to produce more food. Rather than being nomadic, agriculture allowed (or forced) people to settle down and build permanent homes where they could plant their crops, which paved the way for them to accumulate property. However, these changes required a significant amount of time and effort.

While hunter-gatherers used their skills to gather food from the land, farmers had to do everything from plow their fields to planting their crops to tend their flocks, and on and on, it went. Many of the tasks necessary for a productive farm could be performed by children who could put in long hours of repetitive work with little to no training.

To help feed and care for their younger siblings, children in large families often worked in the fields or at home.

Gradually, children’s lives transitioned from being primarily focused on their interests to increasingly including time spent working to support the rest of the household.
